IG is a trade name of IG Markets Ltd (a company registered in England and Wales under number 04008957) and IG Index Ltd (a company registered in England and Wales under number 01190902). IG Markets Ltd (registration number 195355) and IG Index Ltd (registration number 114059) are authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK.
The Financial Conduct Authority is a financial regulatory body in the UK, but it operates independently of the UK government and is funded by charging fees to members of the financial services industry.
The purpose of the FCA is to ensure an adequate degree of consumer protection, protect and improve the integrity of the UK financial system and promote effective competition in the interests of consumers.
The FCA has strict regulatory requirements known as client money and client assets rules (found in the Client Assets Sourcebook — CASS), which govern exactly what brokers can do and how they must do it.
The FCA regulation is generally considered by many to be one of the strictest regulators available and ensures that the IG must comply with established rules and regulations to protect investors.
FCA regulations can give clients peace of mind that they are trading online with a trusted broker and have protection in the unlikely event that something goes wrong.
IG is also a trade name of IG US LLC (a company registered in Delaware under number 6570306). The IG is an RFED and IB registered with the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and a member of the National Futures Association (NFA ID 0509630).
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is an independent agency of the US government created in 1974 that regulates US derivatives markets, which include futures, swaps and certain types of options. The CFTC's mission is to promote the integrity, resilience and vitality of US derivatives markets through strong regulation.
The National Futures Association (NFA) is the self-regulatory organization for the US derivatives industry, including exchange-traded futures, over-the-counter retail foreign currency and over-the-counter derivatives. Designated by the CFTC as a registered futures association, the NFA strives every day to protect the integrity of derivatives markets, protect investors and ensure members meet their regulatory responsibilities.
The NFA is another well-respected regulator that any US trader would likely look to before opening an online trading account with a brokerage like IG. NFA regulation can also give traders peace of mind that they are using an established and transparent broker that must follow strict rules and guidelines to help protect investors' interests.
Impressively, in addition to FCA and NFA regulation, IG is also regulated by other regulators to operate in multiple jurisdictions. They have perhaps the most diverse regulation in place of any online broker, making them one of the most trusted online brokers in the industry.
Please see a list of IG regulators:
- United Kingdom — Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
- USA — Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and National Futures Association (NFA)
- Europe – Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin)
- Switzerland — Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA)
- Australia — Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC)
- New Zealand — Financial Markets Authority (FMA)
- Singapore — Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)
- Japan — Japanese Financial Services Authority (JFSA)
- South Africa — Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA)
- Emirados Arabes Unidos — Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA)
Each regulatory body has its own set of rules and principles, but their objective remains relatively the same — to protect the interests of investors and ensure that the broker operates with honesty, integrity and in a fully transparent manner.
The sheer amount of regulation that IG embodies gives us complete confidence that they are a broker we can trust.
When you deposit money into an IG account as a retail customer, it is protected in a number of ways.
Customers can be confident that when they deposit funds into an IG account, they are protected by being held in segregated accounts at regulated banks under fiduciary agreements.
This ensures that the money remains yours, not IG's. This also means that it is easily identifiable as customer money, so IG and its creditors have no encumbrances, encumbrances or rights to set off, or withhold on it.
They have multiple bank accounts segregated at a number of creditworthy banks such as Barclays and Lloyds. They intentionally ensure that customer money is split between multiple banks and are not allowed to keep it all in one place.
The broker cannot use their money for their own business activities, such as hedging transactions with other counterparties (or as a margin for our own hedging transactions), operating costs and are protected from their creditors.
The only clients whose cash and assets are not treated in this way are professional clients (such as other financial companies) or qualified counterparties who have signed a legal document explaining how their cash and assets are differently held (this is known as a 'transfer of securities' ).
In the unlikely event that IG goes into liquidation, all clients would have their share of the segregated cash or segregated assets returned, minus the costs to administrators in handling and distributing these funds.
Any shortfall in funds of up to £85.000 can be compensated under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).
FSCS is the netting fund of last resort for clients of authorized financial services companies.
It was designed by the UK government to act as a 'safety net' and generally covers private investors (retail customers) and small businesses if they have been customers of a financial services company that becomes insolvent.
It should also be noted that segregated accounts and offsets may not apply to all countries. You should check with the IG branch you are considering opening a trading account with and what protection you will have.
IG accepts traders from most countries, including the US and UK. You may find that the products and services offered may vary from country to country.
It is your responsibility to choose which IG entity best suits your individual needs.
Please note that joining a non-UK/non-European entity means that you are not subject to UK or European customer protections, including those for retail customer protection (such as leverage limits and negative balance protection), although local protections will apply.
This also means that your funds will not be covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, although alternatives may still be available (see below for details).
IG trading platforms
IG has fast, easy to use, reliable, fully customizable and flexible trading platform options that are compatible with desktop computer, laptops, web browsers and mobile devices (iOS and Android).
The platforms you can choose from are IG's proprietary trading platform ProRealTime (PRT), L2 Dealer or the ever-popular MetaTrader 4 (MT4) trading platform.
The broker also offers direct market access (DMA) for professional traders who want to trade directly on the order books of major exchanges.
You should choose a platform that is compatible with your devices and offers the features and functionality that your trading strategies require.
If you are already familiar with a specific trading platform, you might want to stick with this option. If you are new to online trading, MetaTrader 4 is often a popular choice among new traders, but the IG trading platform is also very powerful and full of useful features.
IG trading platform
The IG web trading platform is available online for all users interested in spread betting (UK) or CFD trading. You can manage your account, register cards, make payments, withdraw your funds and much more.
This platform also offers browser-based research tools such as news streaming, economic calendar and trading signals.
IG mobile trading platform
IG offers a tablet and mobile trading platform optimized for iPhone and Android. You have access to the same research and monitoring tools as the web-based platform, and you can view IG mobile charts anywhere.
Progressive IG Web App
IG has launched a progressive web app (PWA), which gives customers anywhere in the world a seamless trading platform on any device — without having to visit a third-party app store.
PWA is optimized to help you receive critical trading updates quickly and easily, avoiding delays inherent in traditional app store review processes.
PRT is suitable for technical graphics users. PRT is free if you trade Forex or CFDs at least four times a month.
You can also trade via API through the PRT platform. You would do this if you wanted to send IG trades from a custom interface you created.
MetaTrader 4 (MT4) trading platform
MetaTrader 4 is a popular third-party platform for CFD trading, with advanced analysis and automated trading tools.
Also, you can choose from 18 custom app add-ons. MT4 is free to download to trade Forex, indices, commodities, energies, metals, cryptos and more.
Developed by Russian software company MetaQuotes, MT4 has a user-friendly interface and is the trading platform of choice for millions of traders worldwide.
There is a large community where traders can share ideas, trading tools, trading signals and automated trading systems.
L2 Dealer is a free downloadable stock trading platform that offers direct market access (DMA). Users can trade CFDs or use the stock trading service supported by useful monitoring tools like watchlists, price alert and orders. You can trade from charts and take advantage of price-enhancing technology at your fingertips.
API means application programming interface. It is a program that connects two applications — for example, your IG trading account and your custom platform.
Trading with APIs allows you to gain direct access to the IG ecosystem, providing faster order execution and more control, which can enhance the trading experience.
Trading with APIs is an easy way to get live market data, historical prices and execute trades from any of your IG trading accounts — without having to manually go through multiple exchanges and dark pools for data and prices.
Instead, you can get the information directly to you, ensuring speed and efficiency.
You can trade directly through the IG API if you want to build your own trading platform. With the IG trading API, you can build your own solutions or use pre-made solutions to trade CFDs and other financial instruments.
Automate your trading by connecting your front-end solutions to IG's market-leading pricing and execution technology.
Trading APIs are popular among hedge funds and registered trading companies as they allow access to more advanced programs, but they are also widely used among traders and private investors.
You just need to generate an API key and connect to the IG API using the provided Excel application or start coding.
IG also offers on-platform support that can help traders make decisions in an instant using powerful tools built into the platforms.
These tools can be used to help reinforce decisions with buy and sell signals, react to events with up-to-date Reuters news, and inform your trades with expert market analysis.
Technical and Fundamental Indicators
IG trading platforms have a wide range of built-in indicators that can help identify changing and trending market conditions.
You can place a technical indicator on the charts to help you get a clearer picture of price movement, while a fundamental indicator can help you identify market sentiment and movements caused by economic data releases.

You never need to miss market movements or financial events with IG's free automated trading alerts.
Trading alerts are free, automatic and customizable notifications can be sent to you whenever your specs are triggered — such as when economic events occur, prices change and technical conditions change.
By having IG Markets monitor the markets for you, you can get on with your day and seize the opportunity when it arises.

IG Trading Signals
IG trading signals can be used to help identify the right time to trade Forex, indices and commodities with IG free trading signals.
Trading signals are actionable 'buy' and 'sell' suggestions, based on technical or fundamental analysis. You can choose to receive signals directly to you as opportunities arise in selected markets and use them to help you decide how to trade.
It must be strongly emphasized that the signal service does not constitute and should not be considered investment advice. IG Markets provides an execution-only service.
You act on the signals entirely at your own risk.
- Get free real-time trading ideas for your chosen markets;
- Ongoing market analysis done on your behalf;
- Easy to access via your mobile device or desktop.
IG's trading signals come directly from two third-party providers, Autochartist and PIA-First.

They also offer advanced technical analysis and charting tools to make algorithmic trading easier for you, whether you want to build and fully customize your own algorithms or use out-of-the-box solutions.
Automated trading uses computer code with chart and technical analysis to enter and exit trades according to defined parameters such as price movements or volatility levels.
Once current market conditions match any predetermined criteria, trading algorithms can execute a buy or sell order on your behalf.
They can also set stop and profit levels on your behalf. This can save you time examining the markets and means your trades are executed almost instantly.

You have three routes to the financial markets with IG — spread betting (UK), CFD trading and investing.
Each offers you a unique set of benefits. Spread betting and CFDs are derivative products, so you can take a position on a market price without owning any assets.
You do not need to enter the full value of your position when opening a trade as spread betting and CFDs are leveraged.
You must have a clear understanding of what leverage is and the risks involved in trading leveraged products. With leverage, losses as well as profits are magnified.
Unlike traditional investing, spread betting and CFDs allow you to take advantage of falling and rising market prices.
If your account balance goes negative, IG mMarkets will bring you back to zero whether you are spread betting or trading CFDs. This only applies to trading-related debt and is not available to professional traders.
